Mission Project

Seed Project

For farming families in southeastern Kenya, a successful harvest can mean the difference between stability and hunger. Yet recurring droughts, unpredictable rainfall, and the effects of climate change continue to threaten the livelihoods of small-scale farmers throughout the Kibwezi region. Many families depend entirely on what they grow to feed their children and generate income, making crop failures especially devastating.

To help communities become more resilient, Maryknoll is providing drought-resistant seeds specifically selected for arid and semi-arid conditions. These improved varieties of maize, beans, and green grams mature quickly, require less rainfall, and produce higher yields than traditional crops. In addition to improving food production, several of the seed varieties are rich in essential nutrients such as iron and zinc, helping combat malnutrition and improve overall health, particularly among children.

By equipping farming families with climate-resilient crops, this project helps increase harvests, strengthen food security, and provide a reliable source of income. Your support empowers families to move beyond subsistence farming, build greater resilience to climate change, and create a more sustainable future for their communities.
