For farming families in southeastern Kenya, a successful harvest can mean the difference between stability and hunger. Yet recurring droughts, unpredictable rainfall, and the effects of climate change continue to threaten the livelihoods of small-scale farmers throughout the Kibwezi region. Many families depend entirely on what they grow to feed their children and generate income, making crop failures especially devastating.
To help communities become more resilient, Maryknoll is providing drought-resistant seeds specifically selected for arid and semi-arid conditions. These improved varieties of maize, beans, and green grams mature quickly, require less rainfall, and produce higher yields than traditional crops. In addition to improving food production, several of the seed varieties are rich in essential nutrients such as iron and zinc, helping combat malnutrition and improve overall health, particularly among children.

In the semi-arid region of Kibwezi, Kenya, families face the daily challenges of drought, poor harvests, and increasing environmental degradation. To help communities build a more sustainable future, Maryknoll is supporting a Care of Creation initiative that combines reforestation, renewable energy, and environmental stewardship. Drought-resistant trees such as Mukau and Moringa are being planted throughout local parish communities to improve soil fertility, increase water retention, reduce erosion, and provide nutritional and economic benefits for families. The project also includes the installation of a solar-powered pump at a community well, replacing a fossil fuel-powered system and ensuring more sustainable access to clean water. Together, these efforts help protect the environment, strengthen food security, and improve the lives of farming families facing the growing challenges of climate change.

Many beneficiaries are women, youth, or individuals with disabilities who face significant barriers to economic opportunity. As families succeed, they share their knowledge and resources with others, creating a ripple effect that strengthens the entire community. Across Asia, many migrant workers face exploitation, unsafe working conditions, and violations of their basic human rights. Maryknoll works alongside laborers, community organizations, corporations, and government agencies to address labor abuses, human trafficking, and environmental concerns within global supply chains. Through advocacy, worker education, research, and collaboration, this ministry promotes ethical business practices and human dignity. These efforts have already helped restore workers’ rights and recover millions of dollars in illegally charged recruitment fees. Conflict and violence in Myanmar have forced millions of people from their homes, creating one of the world’s most significant humanitarian crises. Maryknoll partners with local organizations to provide emergency food, medicine, shelter, and humanitarian assistance to displaced families living near the Thai border.
