(Thailand) English Education Program for Buddhist Monks
Your gifts enables Brother John Beeching, M.M., to provide English-language training for approximately 32 to 35 students Buddhist monks and Thai lay persons from Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam and Sri Lanka. The program has assisted a number of very poor Cambodian and Vietnamese monks who came to Thailand to complete high school and university education.
The entire community of Buddhist monks were either killed or forced to leave the Buddhist monkhood during the time of the Pol Pot Khmer Rouge and the Cambodian monks’ community is still in various stages of being rebuilt and re-educated.
This training also provides a wonderful opportunity for Maryknoll volunteers and affiliates to serve overseas in a unique interfaith experience. Besides the Buddhist monks studying in the program, there is an equal number of Thai lay students in the classes – some retired persons who study English to improve their speaking and writing ability; and a number of young Thais learning English as a job skill.
