Maryknoll Fathers and Brothers – also known as the Catholic Foreign Mission Society of America, Inc. – was founded in 1911 with the support of the Bishops of the United States to be the chief mission outreach of the Catholic Church in the United States. Acquire and edit books and serve as a member of a book-publishing team in the service of Maryknoll’s mission. Successful acquisition and development of 15+ titles per year.
- Develop and maintain productive relationships with authors and prospective authors, groups, and organizations.
- Attend academic and other conferences.
- Review submitted manuscripts for quality and appropriateness for the Orbis program.
- Reject inappropriate manuscripts.
- Maintain delivery and publication schedules with authors.
- Prepare materials for periodic launches of new products, catalog and cover copy, and contribute to successful marketing and launch of new titles.
- Master-edit and, as needed, line-edit manuscripts for production.
 Qualifications:
- Graduate-level education in religious studies, theology, or related field.
- Understanding of book publishing industry (5 years or more practical work in publishing).
- Excellent writing skills, ability to master-edit, rewrite, direct revision of works for cogency and literary style.
- Understanding of basic editorial functions.
- Knowledge of the audiences for Orbis Books, including academic, religious and general trade.
- Capacity to work with inexperienced writers (helping them shape projects) as well as doctoral-level scholars in areas of Orbis specialization; diplomatic skills and ability to work effectively with others.
- Basic computer and word-processing skills.
