The project aims to augment the agricultural income of the families of these women, empower these women to play a larger and stronger role in the economic and social lives of their families and the wider community, and to lessen the chance that they will become victims of domestic violence. (Vietnam) Capacity Building for the Blind

In partnership with the Training and Rehabilitation Center for the Blind (TRCB) in Hanoi, the training arm of the Vietnam Blind Association (VBA), and with the Hai Duong Province Blind Association (HDBA) and the Vinh Phuc Province Blind Association (VPBA), Maryknoll will give training courses in capacity building and life skills to blind people at the three centers. The project provides training in skills they need to better implement programs to assist their blind members and to provide basic life skills training to blind people, especially to women. The project beneficiaries are 120 blind staff people from the Vinh Phuc Blind Association, 276 blind staff from the Hai Duong Blind Association, 75 blind women from Hai Duong Blind Association and 150 blind people who will receive training at the TRCB in Hanoi. The project will provide equipment and facility upgrading for the TRCB massage center. You can help!

Maryknoll Ministry to Foreign Migrant workers and New Immigrants in Taiwan is in the Diocese of Taichung and Archdiocese of Taipei. The two Ugnayan centers and shelters serve and welcome all foreign migrant workers in Taiwan. We reach out to the foreign migrant workers, the new immigrants, foreign spouses and their families. We rent buildings for church, activities, training centers and shelters for foreign migrant workers. We provide free educational training to help improve the job skills of the workers ( electronic repairs, carpentry, dressmaking), basic Chinese language, leadership formation, lectures and seminars. We partner and network with other church groups and NGOís in doing advocacy for migrant workers rights and government agencies for trainings. Through the generosity of our benefactors, Father Joe Thaler, M.M., continues to rebuild the multiple programs that aim at providing health care and education for the workers employed by the brick factories as well as taking care of people residing in remote villages. In addition, the Trans Himalayan Environmental Livelihood Program provided training in cultivation, briquette making, organic farming and vermicomposting. The Freed Kamaiya Upliftment Forum supports the freed kamaiya children through education promotion activities, empowers the freed kamaiya women through the training about income generation and capacity building, and sensitizes the freed kamaiya women through STI and HIV/AIDS awareness orientation activities. The Disabled Welfare Association is a 10-month sewing program for the differently abled to learn how to sew with the objective of increasing awareness about their rights and enabling them to earn for themselves and their families. In collaboration with Maryknoll Sister Mary Grenough, M.M., MCHAN ñ the Myanmar Catholic HIV/AIDS Network ñ was developed to include 18 local programs in 16 of the countryís 18 dioceses. These programs, under Father James Kofski, M.M., offer holistic assistance to reduce the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Myanmar, and to alleviate the suffering of persons and families already affected by the disease. Its aim also is to establish community-based health and education, care and support of pregnant mothers, their children, their partners and the youth with primary purpose to reduce HIV infections from mothers to babies.

This project responds to the cross-border trafficking of girls and women and provides trafficking survivors and at-risk girls with primary education and then 9th grade education (all within a 9-month period) so they can pass the government equivalency exam. They are provided hotel and tourism training for 2 years where they can each choose to study one of the following specialties: Reception/Front Office; Waitress, Cashier and Catering; Cookís Assistant and buffet setup or Housekeeping and hotel Laundry. Their training includes job placement in an international or boutique hotel in Phnom Penh where the graduates receive high salaries and benefits and so can help support themselves and their families in dignity.
